Jammin’

If you follow me on Twitter or Facebook you may have noticed that I did something special over the long weekend. I made jam. Not just one type of jam – but three types!

Going into the long weekend, I had no plans to make jam. Then my mom called me to tell me she had a bunch of mason jars and was thinking of making some jam. Neither of us has ever ever canned anything. So of course, I told of her I would love to make some and headed over.

I’d been flirting with the idea of making some jam this summer because all of the local berries are unbelievably delicious this year. I had seen the Pioneer Woman‘s tutorial one day while randomly looking up strawberry jam. She made it look so easy (which she tends to do with most everything because well, she’s the Pioneer Woman). Armed with this tutorial and a head full of quickly gathered research, we dove right in. I’m all about conquering some culinary fears these days, just like with the pie!

I wasn’t sure what to expect. I knew it wasn’t easy and I admit, I was a bit afraid. In fact, I was downright intimidated by it. But I was determined. We gathered our berries, jars, and instruction and set to work.

And once we started, we couldn’t stop. Making jam is addicting.


We first made strawberry jam that literally tastes like summer. It is also the most beautiful ruby red color – the jars look like gems.

Then we made peach chutney with spiced rum. This is divine. I want to spoon it over vanilla bean ice cream while I drink bourbon.

Then we made blueberry jam. It’s dark and mysterious looking but tastes so bright and refreshing.

After we made all of our jams, we anxiously waited until the next day to test the seals. I may have lost a few hours of sleep over this. I was terrified that none would be sealed and we would be forced to eat jam everyday for weeks until we finished it – although come to think of it, that wouldn’t be half bad. The following morning I got up, made my espresso, and eagerly tested the jams. They were all sealed! Glorious!

Now that I know how easy and fun it is to make jam, I will be doing it much more often. I’m also pondering my entrance into the pickling world – good thing there is a #pickleparty to get me motivated! If you have never made jam before – try it!   1. Your jam looks perfect and the peach chutney with spiced rum sounds amazing. I LOVE chutney. Have you ever used it as a spread on sandwiches, if not, definitely give it a try! Sooo good.

    I’ve never made jam or pickles before but I would love to try it out. I have made apple butter but I used the freezer method for preserving.
